Representative payees are required by the SSA to keep detailed records of how every SSI dollar is spent — but the SSA does not provide a tool to do it. Most families resort to shoeboxes of receipts or messy spreadsheets, and when an accounting review arrives, the stress is overwhelming. SSI Usage Tracker exists to solve that specific problem: giving families and guardians a simple, purpose-built way to track SSI payments and expenses so they are always ready for an SSA accounting review.
We believe that tools for managing public benefits should be free and accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial situation or technical skill. No one should have to pay for software just to prove they are spending their child's SSI funds responsibly.
What is SSI?
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal income supplement program administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA). It is designed to help aged, blind, and disabled people who have little or no income. SSI provides cash to meet basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter. Unlike Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), SSI is not based on prior work history. Instead, eligibility is determined by financial need, age, and disability status.
Many SSI recipients are children, elderly individuals, or adults with disabilities who may need assistance managing their benefits. In these cases, the SSA appoints a representative payee — a person or organization responsible for receiving and managing SSI payments on behalf of the beneficiary. Representative payees are legally obligated to use SSI funds for the beneficiary's basic needs, including housing, food, clothing, medical care, and personal items. They must also keep records of how the money is spent and report this information to the SSA when requested.
As of 2026, the maximum federal SSI payment is adjusted annually based on cost-of-living increases. Some states provide supplementary payments in addition to the federal benefit. About the Creator
SSI Usage Tracker was built by Ron Margalit, a technologist located in Florida. As the parent of a child with a disability who receives SSI, Ron experienced firsthand how difficult it is to keep the detailed spending records that the Social Security Administration requires of representative payees. After struggling with spreadsheets and paper receipts, he decided to build the tool he wished had existed — one designed specifically for families in his situation.
What started as a personal project for his own family quickly grew into something he wanted to share with the thousands of other parents, guardians, and representative payees facing the same challenge.
